👣The weekend is a great time to spend some time barefoot outside.

👉🏽There are many reasons why this is beneficial to our health and as many reasons to be uncomfortable doing so, from the physical sensations if you're not used to it to the negative social aspects you may be sef conscious of.
.
🧠How do you surpass these? Just like everything else, you start small. Find a spot where it's more socially acceptable and physical sensations are not overwhelming: a beach, a playground, a park, an outdoor fitness station, etc…

Your evening commute can be a perfect time to train and the easier one to convert to an active commute since you arrive at home and not at work. If you can change before leaving, then you no longer have clothing constraints. .
Not only can you get some movement in during the commute itself but you can take advantage of any moment along the way, as I do here at school pickup.

Yes, it might make your commute a bit longer, but most probably it won't make it longer by the same amount of time it would have taken you to go to the gym and have a session, while providing you most (if not all) of its benefits.

🎥 What’s on IG is of course not the full reality of the fitness practice of anyone: if it was, IG would be pretty boring as good fitness practice doesn’t translate automatically in IG-worthy media 😁.

The above quote describes accurately my situation for the just ended #BalanceWithBerndChallenge @movnat  challenge. I love those challenges as they get many in the #movnat community come together and always try my utmost to participate. I started it but then life intervened and my time to participate drastically declined. .
Then I had to face the choice above, which meant that although I continued to train every day, I couldn’t take the time to find and record something nice to post, as I didn’t want to just post something too boring.
.
Easy choice in appearance but the pressure to post on social media can very easily lead us to priritize getting and posting media rather than the actual training. Don’t let that pressure get to you and keep on training, that’s what counts!

👶🏼 With the weekend upon us and if you have kids or other occasions to visit a playground, keep in mind that most swing sets (not all) are an excellent place to practice some hanging and climbing movements. Most of us adults don’t get enough time working on our pull strength or simply hanging and this impacts, among other things, our shoulder and back health.⁠
.⁠
🧠Getting into a regular habit of practicing these moves is not easy but will pay off a lot in the future. If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in playgrounds regularly, then it becomes way easier. Try to use the swing sets as triggers to practice hanging and climbing. You’ll have to think about it the first few times but it will progressively become a habit over time. Once it does, it will be easier to get into a habit of hanging anywhere.⁠

Start easy at your current abilities: on some swing sets, you can even hang from the bar and keep your feet on the ground to absorb some of your body weight with the legs. Or you can even hang from one of the poles and lean back keeping both legs on the ground if you cannot currently support more than a fraction of your body weight.⁠
.⁠
👉🏽It really doesn’t matter where you start as long as you challenge yourself and make it a priority to get some hanging/climbing time each time you are in the presence of a swing set !⁠

Day 5 (skipping Day 4 for now, no time!) of the #BalanceWithBerndChallenge @movnat challenge and it's balancing carries. You can consider this post as an illustration of my previous one as well 😁

Is carrying Ilan and my backpack challenging for me? Not really. Is balancing on the border of the sidewalk challenging? Again, not really.
.
But is balancing while getting Ilan to the daycare center before going to work beneficial for my physical abilities? It is! All the more so because the alternative would be doing the exact same without balancing. I consider it training. If I weren’t , I would just be walking and overlooking a training opportunity.

🧠 That reframing is a simple but powerful Mental Shift.⁠
.⁠
How do you define fitness training? This is a question worth asking yourself as it is almost certainly limiting the total volume (and the quality) of your training. Mental images shape behaviors.⁠
.⁠
Most people view training as either working out or specific sports training. That’s it, there isn’t much to it. And I get it, we’re encouraged to view training as only those activities.⁠
.⁠
The problem is we’re also conditioned to prioritize and value more activities that are “productive”. And for fitness goals, training is viewed as the only productive time. ⁠
.⁠
If something is viewed as productive, we make an effort to do it more. If it’s not, then chances are we won’t make the time do do it in the face of all our other responsibilities. What you define as training becomes critical, as everything that is not training will get deprioritized, even if it’s very beneficial for you.⁠
.⁠
So how should you define training, for yourself? I’d argue that training is any activity that improves or maintain your physical fitness and capabilities.⁠
.⁠
Suddenly carrying heavy groceries is seen as training as much as carrying the same weight with dumbbells or kettlebells in the gym. Training opportunities open up.⁠
.⁠
